Eileen Penman, a singer & songwriter from Edinburgh, and former member of the group 'Stairheid Gossip' has agreed to sing at our 'Hear the Nation' Art Exhibition on 21st June!
As we really wanted to demonstrate and celebrate different aspects of our scottish culture - music and song, as well as art and craft, we're delighted. Eileen will arriving in the afternoon, so if you want to hear her, make a note in your diary now!
Eileen's repertoire is large, covering the Scots Tradition, American Folk/Country and Political Song. She has led workshops & community singing groups for many years and tutored in folksong with the Gorgie/Dalry Adult Learning Project for 10 years.
She hasn't always been a supporter of Scottish Independence, so we're very fortunate that, as a feminist and socialist, she has come to the conclusion that Scotland should separate from the British state and become a democratic republic.
“I’ve been reading a lot about what it will mean to become an independent country, " Eileen says. 'And the more I read about the lies, corruption & sexism within Westminster and the historic role of Britain as a colonial power, the more I believe Scotland should tak it’s ain road.'
This is exactly the process of reflection that we've that we've seen taking place in our Listening Groups.
"The UK is past its sell-by date and no longer it for purpose,” she has decided. Totally agree with with you there, Eileen!
Thanks for volunteering.
