Women for Independence NE Fife have organised three arts projects which gradually evolved to include about 100 people (no, yes, and undecided voters) across Scotland. We talk together without fear of ridicule, worked together, shared experiences – and reflected on change, which is, after all, a natural process. We respected other points of view, but imagined a new Scotland … created our own visions. We brought hope into the independence debate and built bridges across political divides. And yes, of course we wanted to advance the cause of independence. We knew that the more people thought about the issues, the more they’d turn to Yes.
Thirty six of us, different ages, backgrounds and political persuasions, from Shetland to the Borders, Lewis to Aberdeen have just ‘Knitted a Nation’ – a large map of Scotland. Our landscapes and seascapes present an extravaganza of impressions, memories and interpretations and are a testament to our desire to ‘do something’ for Scotland. If people laugh at the distinctive, irreverent task we set ourselves, so much the better.
‘A NEW CHAPTER’: This interactive installation, developed at ‘crafternoons’, symbolises our hopes, aspirations and expectations. It includes a composition by the saxophonist Richard Ingham: art - 307 altered books, an urn for the ‘ashes of the past’; and a book sculpture by paper artist Isabel Buenz with a specially commissioned poem by Robert Crawford. It’s interactive – folding new books, re-arranging – or even removing them – reminds us that we all have a role to play, that small actions can create new opportunities, radical shifts in perspective… and major consequences.
These installations will be unveiled at a reception on Friday 20th June at the Corn Exchange in Cupar, and will form the centrepiece of our Art Exhibition and sale at a Hear the Nation event the next day. Twenty high profile professional artists have agreed to exhibit and sell artwork.
There will also be craft stalls and workshops, musicians playing throughout the day and a book stall of work by local authors. All are welcome - whatever your opinion on the referendum! - and if you have any questions, please contact us.
