As I wrote a couple of weeks ago, Women for Independence NE Fife have recently received a most wonderful anonymous "donation" - of poetry on the subject of independence. Here is the second, which challenges us to step back - and see the "happy serendipity" than an independent Scotland can and will achieve.
Step back
to see things in perspective. Suppose this touted ‘void’ in Governance
of Banks, of Energy, and school of thought on national defence, or any rule
that previously made us all ‘dependent’.
Can’t Scots make legislation? Or calculate the value of their worth?
Or harness power, or pool great minds
while nourishing the populace with every kind of harvest for survival of a nation?
Can Scottish ‘fiscal prudence’ (historically ridiculed by all),
so suddenly - without the mirth – have undergone a transformation and rebirth
as risible ineptitude and rashness?
And knowing of the feeling in the land, on vain intrusions being planned,
does Westminster you think take heed,
or autonomously carry out those dire deeds? Traits that bare a disconcerting dimension,
which would seem, then, to portray a forceful and duplicitous servant;
the one that they would have you choose in favour of the one they say can only lose
by opting out of supping at their table.
But if you rate that culture, the frequent insults, flippancy and ire,
and you are sticking to your path
and voting No, you will in time incur no wrath in anybody’s conscience save your own one.
By holding in confusion the trusting people who have placed them there,
the perpetrators thus employ a suspect methodology, a weighted buoy
that drowns our weak humanitarianism.
Searching in your heart of hearts – which without their agreement you can do –
will you be seeing things the same
when you are parting from this side of life and gain a clarity of vision that sees in Truth?
If we stay calm, and ration that in the great scheme all will be okay,
the terrified and covetous cannot then undermine the potential in us -
to care and share and follow the right calling.
We’ll not succumb to failure but summon our innate survival mode,
and nominate the ones of strength
who’ll regulate the plan and go to any length for sake of gaining trust by proving worthy.
The champions who led here will graciously bequeath to them the chair,
by not assuming now to be the representatives – an act they must agree
lends everything to promise for the future.
We’ll not depend on imports, but cultivate our bountiful domain,
co-operatively building lives,
and place respectful faith in Stewardship that strives to honour all attendant expectations.
For all we need surrounds us, if we are not mere slaves to avarice;
The air, the land, the teeming seas. Creative kinds, ensuring that a good degree of genius
conceptualizes for us;
who, careful for the future, will propagate sustainability
so no disastrous element should fell us.
Then, free from self-inflicted torment, we’ll achieve our happy serendipity.
