Have you seen Michael Greenwell’s blog on how the BBC portrays the map of the United Kingdom? It’s well worth a read (as are all his posts).
I emailed him to tell him about our map – how, in order to have Shetland and Orkney in the right place, we needed 21 knitted squares of sea as well as the 15 squares of land. I told him how beautiful it was going to be…
The map. Our map. Our handknitted map of Scotland. Our beautifully quirky handknitted map of Scotland. That is to be ‘unveiled’ at our art exhibition preview on 20th June 2014, and on display for all to see the next day at our public exhibition. But, it hasn't always been an easy journey!
At many points along the way, I coudn't help but think: Is it going to be ready in time?? If I was a nail-biter, I guess I’d have no fingernails left!
The final date for return of knitted pieces was the end of March. There should have been 36 pieces then… unfortunately one knitter had misread the instructions as her piece was about half the size it needed to be. Ok, that should be 35. Well, almost 35.
One knitter pulled out at the last moment due to illness.
One knitter went missing – suddenly there was no response to emails.
One piece of the map went missing in the post.
One person lost her pattern in a flitting…
I began to feel as if I was stuck in a performance of ‘Ten Green Bottles’.
Never mind, two months on, halfway through May, it seemed we were almost ready. Just waiting for the last two pieces that were coming from Mona, our knitter in Germany. Maybe better just check… just in case. Oops, she posted them in April.
But, as these things do, it has all come together - though it did wait for just the last minute to do so, of course. And the map, our map, it really is beautiful. It only goes to show what a group of individuals, working together, out of love, can produce. We knitted a map... next stop, let's build a country for it to represent.
